AFCON 2027 Qualifiers: Rwanda Thrash Liberia 3-1 To Make Dream Start To PAMOJA Journey

Amavubi send strong message in Kigali

KIGALI, Rwanda – The road to PAMOJA 2027 started in perfect fashion for Rwanda.

The Amavubi cruised to a dominant 3-1 victory over Liberia at home on Friday, September 25, in their opening match of the Africa Cup of Nations 2027 qualifiers, igniting hopes of qualification for the historic tournament that will be co-hosted by Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya.

From the first whistle, Rwanda showed they meant business. Playing with intensity and purpose, Frank Spittler’s men put Liberia under pressure and were rewarded with three first-half goals. Liberia managed to pull one back, but Rwanda’s defence held firm in the second half to secure all three points in Group K.

This was more than just three points. This was a statement.

A Perfect Start in Group K

The win puts Rwanda at the top of Group K after Matchday 1. The group also features Mali and Cape Verde – two tough opponents – but Rwanda have now taken the early advantage.

Under the new PAMOJA qualification format, every point counts. With Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania already qualified as co-hosts, the battle in the other groups is fierce. For Rwanda, who have not featured at AFCON since 2004, this campaign is a golden opportunity to make history in a tournament that will be played on East African soil.

The atmosphere in Kigali was electric. Fans turned up in large numbers, waving the national flag and chanting “Turi kumwe” – We are together. And the players responded.

Tactical Masterclass

Rwanda controlled the midfield and used the wings effectively. The high press forced Liberia into mistakes, and Rwanda punished them clinically. Scoring three goals in a qualifier is not easy, especially against a physical Liberian side, but the Amavubi showed composure and quality in front of goal.

The second half was about game management. Rwanda sat deeper, kept possession, and denied Liberia any clear chances to get back into the game.

It is the kind of maturity that has been missing in previous campaigns.

What This Means For PAMOJA 2027

The 2027 Africa Cup of Nations will be the biggest football event ever hosted in East Africa. For Rwanda to be part of it would be massive for the country and for the CECAFA region.

With this 3-1 win, Rwanda have announced themselves as serious contenders for qualification. The journey is still long – there are five more games to play in Group K – but the start could not have been better.

Next up for Rwanda is a tricky away trip to Cape Verde on September 29th, while Liberia will host Mali. If Rwanda can get a result away from home, the dream of playing AFCON in front of East African fans will feel very real.
