APR FC and Rayon Sports Exit CAF Competitions After Second-Round Defeats

Rwanda’s APR FC and Rayon Sports have both been eliminated from their respective CAF competitions in the second preliminary round of the 2026/27 season, with tactical decisions and missed opportunities raising questions about their performances.

APR FC Eliminated by Zamalek on 2-0 Aggregate

APR FC have been knocked out of the CAF Champions League after losing 2-0 on aggregate to Egyptian giants Zamalek SC.

Across the two legs, Zamalek demonstrated that they were a well-organised side, although they did not appear overwhelmingly superior to some of the Arab teams APR FC have faced in previous CAF competitions.

APR FC showed some weaknesses, particularly in tactical execution and a lack of attacking alternatives. The Rwandan champions struggled to find enough solutions in the final third, making it difficult to overcome Zamalek’s defence.

The absence or lack of full preparation of some key players also affected APR FC’s ability to deliver the expected performance. With their important players fully prepared and the right tactical approach, APR FC might have had a better chance against a Zamalek side that did not display extraordinary strength over the two matches.

Ultimately, small mistakes and a lack of attacking efficiency proved costly for the Rwandan champions, who must now reflect on their performance and identify areas that need improvement.

Rayon Sports Fall to Black Bulls in the CAF Confederation Cup

Rayon Sports have also been eliminated from the 2026/27 CAF Confederation Cup after losing to Mozambique’s Black Bulls in the second preliminary round.

The return leg exposed some of the mistakes made during the first match in Kigali, particularly regarding the coach’s selection of players for such an important encounter.

Although Black Bulls deserve credit for progressing, Rayon Sports’ elimination suggests that the Mozambican side were not necessarily an insurmountable opponent. Football has no small teams, but in matches of this level, small tactical errors can make the difference between qualification and elimination.

Rayon Sports entered the return leg determined to overturn the two-goal deficit suffered at home. However, their focus on scoring the goals required to turn the tie around appeared to come at the expense of defensive responsibility.

The Blues managed to score the two goals they needed to level the aggregate score, but conceding twice meant their comeback effort ultimately fell short. Their attacking ambition was not matched by sufficient defensive discipline, allowing Black Bulls to punish their mistakes.

Tactical Decisions and Missed Opportunities Prove Costly

The elimination of both APR FC and Rayon Sports highlights the importance of tactical planning, squad selection, preparation and efficiency in continental football.

For APR FC, the challenge was finding attacking solutions against a disciplined Zamalek side. For Rayon Sports, the problem was balancing the need to score with the responsibility of protecting their goal.

Both teams had opportunities to compete for a place in the next round, but small mistakes made over two legs proved decisive.

The two exits will be disappointing for Rwandan football supporters, who had hoped to see both clubs progress further in Africa’s premier club competitions. The teams must now learn from these experiences and strengthen their preparations for future continental challenges.
