APR FC Are Still Alive in the Numbers, But in the Eyes of Football, They Are Already Out

APR FC’s 3-1 victory over Garde Républicaine revived their hopes of reaching the CECAFA Kagame Cup semi-finals—at least mathematically. The Rwandan champions responded well after their humiliating 5-0 defeat to Gor Mahia, collecting their first three points of the tournament and remaining in contention for qualification. 

However, football is not decided by mathematics alone. Performances, momentum, goal difference and confidence often tell a different story.

Against Gor Mahia, APR looked disorganized defensively and struggled to compete throughout the 90 minutes. Although they bounced back with a convincing first-half display against Garde Républicaine, conceding late and failing to add more goals left them with a significant goal-difference disadvantage. 

The situation became even more difficult after Vipers SC defeated Gor Mahia 1-0 to move onto six points. Gor Mahia and APR both remained on three points, but the Kenyan side held the superior goal difference, meaning APR’s qualification hopes depended not only on winning but also on other results going in their favour. 

For a club of APR’s stature, simply staying alive mathematically is not enough. Expectations are to dominate regional opponents and qualify on merit. Instead, the tournament has exposed defensive weaknesses, inconsistency, and a lack of cutting edge when goal difference became crucial.

So while the calculations still leave a narrow path to the semi-finals, the football reality is far less encouraging. APR FC remain alive on paper, but unless they produce a dramatic improvement and results elsewhere fall in their favour, their CECAFA Kagame Cup campaign is hanging by a thread.
