FERWAFA Super Cup 2026: A Competition Like No Other in Rwanda’s Football History

The 2026 FERWAFA Super Cup has taken an unusual turn, with the competition adopting a four-team format instead of the traditional one-match showdown.
The Super Cup semi finals are scheduled for August 27, 2026, with Kiyovu Sports facing Mukura Victory Sports & Loisirs at 15:00, followed by Rayon Sports against Police FC at 18:30 at Kigali Pelé Stadium.
The biggest twist came after APR FC, the Rwanda Premier League champions, declined to participate in the four team format. As a result, Mukura VS&L was selected to replace APR FC, creating a competition featuring four clubs rather than the conventional champion versus cup winner format.
The decision has generated debate among Rwandan football followers, particularly because the Super Cup is traditionally regarded as the curtain-raiser between the country’s major domestic champions. The new format therefore raises questions about the identity and purpose of the competition, especially when the league champion is not involved.
Why this Super Cup is different
The 2026 edition brings together Kiyovu Sports, Mukura VS&L, Rayon Sports and Police FC, with the winners of the two semi-finals advancing to the final.
For Kiyovu and Mukura, the match provides an opportunity to compete for a major domestic trophy before the new season gets fully underway. Rayon Sports, meanwhile, will face Police FC in what promises to be another highly anticipated Kigali encounter.
The four team format also gives the competition a mini-tournament character, something rarely associated with the FERWAFA Super Cup.
FERWAFA’s published 2026 calendar also lists the Super Cup period at the end of August, although the federation notes that its calendar can be subject to change.
A Super Cup surrounded by questions
The major talking point, however, remains APR FC’s absence.
With the reigning Rwanda Premier League champions out of the competition, supporters are likely to question whether the 2026 Super Cup should be viewed as a traditional Super Cup or as a special four-team tournament created under exceptional circumstances.
Whatever the final outcome, the 2026 edition is already set to be remembered as one of the most unusual Super Cup editions in recent Rwandan football.
The question now is simple: who will lift the 2026 FERWAFA Super Cup after this unprecedented change in format?
