Niyigena Clément’s Al Hilal Move Sparks Tension at APR FC

KIGALI — The Rwandan football scene was set ablaze during the January transfer window when star defender Clement Niyigena became the center of a dramatic tug-of-war between his current club, APR FC, and Sudanese giants Al Hilal Omdurman.

While the transfer window has shut, the behind-the-scenes details of the deal continue to emerge, painting a picture of heavy frustration for the player.

Clement Niyigena, widely regarded as one of the best defenders in Rwanda and a regular for the national team, was heavily pursued by Al Hilal Omdurman in January. Personal terms were reportedly agreed upon, and Al Hilal’s head coach, Laurențiu Reghecampf, even went on record in a press conference expressing confidence that the Rwandan center-back was joining his squad.

However, the move quickly hit a roadblock. The APR FC Chairman and management flatly rejected the proposal. The reasoning from the club’s top brass was clear: with the January window rapidly closing, finding a suitable, high-caliber replacement for Niyigena was near impossible. APR FC prioritized their own domestic and continental ambitions over the transfer fee.

Despite APR FC’s public refusal to let the player leave, renowned sports journalist Sam Karenzi dropped a massive bombshell on his sports talk show on SK FM Radio.

According to Karenzi, while Al Hilal Omdurman was scheduled to play against Moroccan side RS Berkane, he personally saw hard evidence regarding the transfer. Karenzi confirmed on-air that Clement Niyigenahad actually signed a contract with Al Hilal.

The revelation proved just how close the defender was to securing his dream move abroad. Unfortunately for Niyigena, signing the player’s side of the contract means very little if the parent club refuses to sign off on the release or transfer matching system (TMS).

Because the deal was completely blocked by APR FC management, Niyigena has to stay with the Army side until at least the end of the current season.

Karenzi continued his report by stating that the failed transfer left Niyigena feeling deeply frustrated and angry. Having agreed to highly lucrative terms and put pen to paper, seeing the opportunity pulled away at the last minute has visibly taken a toll on the player’s morale.

What’s Next for Niyigena?

Niyigena is expected to see out the rest of his obligations with APR FC, but his long-term future with the club is now in serious doubt. With his contract winding down, several top African clubs like CS Sfaxien and Pyramids FC are reportedly keeping a close eye on the situation.

Whether the defender can channel his frustration into helping APR FC win silverware before making his exit in the summer remains to be seen.
