APR HC Fight Back from 2-0 Down to Win Rwanda Handball Championship

APR HC have been crowned champions of the 2025–26 Handball League after defeating Police HC 3-2 in the championship playoff series.

The Rwanda Defence Force-backed side, coached by Anaclet Bagirishya, made history by winning the title after losing the first two matches of the series before mounting an impressive comeback to win the next three consecutive games.

The decisive fifth match ended with APR HC securing a 31-29 victory over Police HC. APR HC led 16-14 at halftime, thanks in large part to goalkeeper Uwimana Jackson, who made several crucial saves to deny Police HC clear scoring opportunities.

In the second half, Police HC fought back and managed to level the score at 19-19, inspired by the performances of Yves Kayijamahe and Kubwimana.

However, APR HC regained control of the match through the efforts of Bryan Wakhuka and Rwamanywa Viateur, who helped the team open up a decisive lead until the final whistle.

The triumph marks APR HC’s fourth league title, while Police HC missed the opportunity to claim what would have been their 11th championship.

By winning the league, APR HC have earned the right to represent Rwanda at the African Handball Club Championship for national league winners, which will be held in Angola later this year.

In other divisions, E.SC. Nyamagabe won the Women’s First Division title after defeating UR Rukara 40-23, while Mutenderi TSS claimed the Men’s Second Division championship with a 31-24 victory over TTC de la Salle.
